En 1963, Herbert Gilbert patentó "un cigarrillo sin tabaco y sin humo". En su patente Gilbert describió cómo su dispositivo funcionaba, por "sustitución de tabaco en combustión y papel con aire aromatizado, caliente y húmedo."
